According to a Ministry official, the new product has been introduced after taking into consideration the problems children experience as a result of carrying school bags used at present.
According to recent studies conducted by the Ministry, a majority of school children face several health problems due to unhealthy and low quality school bags which do not meet required standards. The most common health problems school children face are problems in the spinal code, nerves and muscles located in the neck, shoulders and back. When school children become adults, they suffer from incurable pains in the back and neck.
School bags available in the market have narrow and unstable belts which do not support the bag properly. The belts put pressure on the shoulders and the neck. When walking, the bags swing putting more pressure on school children's back, shoulders and neck. A scientifically manufactured school bag should hang tightly to the back of the child without moving while walking.
The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry consulted around 200 experts before producing the scientific school bag and also consulted children, parents, school principals and teachers. Community health doctors attached to the Family Health Bureau carried out the project. The bag is rectangle in shape and edges are curved. It has two completely separated compartments. A bag suitable to the height of the child should be selected from different sizes available.
A survey, carried out by Dr. Kapila Jayaratne, Community Health Specialist, has revealed that the bags available today cause many physical ailments.“The standards of the new school bag were set after closely studying the findings revealed by the report,” said Dr. Jayaratne
A public awareness raising campaign will be carried out by the Health Ministry along with the Education Ministry to educate the public on the use of proper school bags.
