On the instructions of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the government has decided to give fertilizer subsidies for all food crops, effective from midnight yesterday.
A 50 kg bag of fertilizer for paddy will continue to be given at the prevailing price of 350 rupees. For all other crops an unmixed fertilizer bag of 50 kgs. Will be given at a subsidised price of 1200 rupees, while a mixed fertilizer bag of the same weight will be priced at 1300 rupees.
This fertilizer wuill be available freely at all state and private sector fertilizer outlets without the necessity of filling out of any forms. The 50 kg bag of fertilizer was earlier available at a price ranging from 3500 rupees to 4000 rupees.
This decision was arrived at a meeting held by the Secretary to the Finacne and Plan implementation Ministry Dr.P.B.Jayasundara.

Under this scheme the fertilizer subsidy was available only for paddy and some crops. But this will be available for all crops with immediate effect.
The government expenditure on this subsidy will be 40,000 million rupees.
