National Safety Day in Jaffna on 26

The National Safety Day will be held in Jaffna. The government has declared December 26, the day tsunami hit the country in 2004 as the National safety day and this year’s event will be held at the Weerasingham Hall in Jaffna..

A nation-wide two minute silence would be maintained from 9.25 am to 9.27 am on Sunday (26) as a mark of respect for all those who died in the 2004 tsunami, the Disaster Management centre said.

The Cabinet of ministers decided to hold this years event in Jaffna and the Minister of Disaster Management, Mahinda Amaraweera has asked all citizens in the country to observe silence from 9.25 a.m to 9.27 a.m as a mark of respect for those who died in the tsunami.

The government has taken the initiatives to set up an early warning network with 100 warning towers island wide.50 tsunami warning centers have already been set up throughout the coastal areas of the country which also includes setting up of fire units under local government authorities
