Batticaloa worst hit by flood
Several tanks and reservoirs are over flowing in the Anuradhapura, Puttalam and Nuwara Eliya district due to heavy rains experienced during the last few days. Deputy Director of the DMC, Mr. Pradeep Kodippily said that Rajanganaya tank. Kalawewa. Tisawewa, Basawakkulama & Nachchaduwa wewa are over flowing and the people vulnerable have been evacuated to safer areas.
Puttalam-Mannar road inundated at Eluwankulama area due to opening of the Sluice gates in Rajangana Wewa and Kala Wewa. He said that
Puttalam – Mannar road via Eluwankulama, has been temporally closed.
2 Sluice gates of Thabbowa tank, 5 sluice gates of Rajanganaya Tank and 4 sluice gates of Inginimitiya tank were opened.
MEANWHILE according to the situation report issued today by the DMC 214,817 persons belonging to 56803 families have been affected by heavy rain. Batticaloa being worst hit be flood where over 200,000 people of 56259 have been affected. 10 welfare centres have been set up in the Batticaloa district at Palacholai Tamil School, Sittandy Murukan Kovil Madam, Sittandy Mathiya Maha Vidyalayam,Multi Purpose Building Chenkalady,Shahir Moulana Vidyalayam,Koralankerny RDS Building,Inbachcholai Pree School,Parankiyamadu Barathy Vidyalaya, SOS Building - Murakadanchenai, Ponduhalehenai & Piranbadithivu Vidyalaya. Around 3000 displaced people have been accommodated in these welfare centres.
