Colombo - Matara train speeds from tomorrow

The modernized Galle - Matara railway track will be declared open tomorrow. This railway track has been modernized enabling trains to go at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour.
The Galle – Matara sector of the Southern railway track was modernized under a loan project from India. The first train will leave Galle railway station at 11 am tomorrow and the Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama and the Indian High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Ashok K Srikantha will be the chief guests at this function.
Train service between Matara and Galle was suspended for the last six months for carrying out the modernisation work.
Under the 2nd stage of this project the railway track from Galle to Hikkaduwa will be modernized. Hikkaduwa to Kalutara South and Kalutara South to Maradana will be modernized under the 3rd and 4th stages respectively.
After completion of all these stages, the Railway Department informs that Matara-Colombo trains will take a short time period of about two hours to reach the destinations.
