Government gets ready for Local Govt Elections in March

All Local Government Institutions will be dissolved in January in order to hold the elections in March 2011. General Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party SLFP Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that the ruling coalition government will finalize its list of nominees by January 2011.

“All present members of the Local Government Institutions and the prospective candidates who want to contest in the forthcoming election should submit their application to the party headquarters before January 15” said Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena.

The Local government elections due last year were postponed by one year. Accordingly, all Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas will be dissolved. At present there are 18 Municipal Councils, 42 Urban Councils and 270 Pradeshiya Sabhas in the country.

Meanwhile Mr. D. Surasinghe Senior Assistant Secretary to the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils said Hambantota Town Councils and Dambulla and Kaduwela Pradeshiya Sabhas will be upgraded as Municipal Councils after the forthcoming elections are over
