The army has come forward to provide vegetables at cheap prices. Based on a concept of President Mahinda Rajapakse, the Defence Secretary Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakse has made arrangements to launch this programme with effect from today.
Under the first stage of this programme 25 thousand kilos of vegetables directly purchased from the farmers in Anuradhapura and Kandy districts will be marketed at 15 sales outlets.
The army will directly purchase vegetables from farms situated in close vicinity to army camps throughout the island, which would enable the army to provide vegetables at cheap prices to consumers without the interference of middlemen and the black market mafia. Only the transport charges will be added to the purchasing price.
The army commander Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya has made all arrangements to implement this programme successfully. The army will sell vegetables at Maligawatte housing complex, Hyde Park, Muttaiah road, Torrington, Fort railway station, Borella, Rajagiriya, Ja-ela, Ekala, Katunayaka, Maharagama, Homagama and Kaduwela from today onwards. The army will expand this programme to cover other areas as well in the near future.
