The Sri Lanka Navy in its’ continuing efforts to add splendour to city by keeping clean the canal network of Colombo while preventing catastrophic flooding in the area has come forward to resurrect waterways of Lunawa Lagoon.
It was ceremonially opened for water sports facilities yesterday (02)). Navy has decided to provide training and instructions to aspiring enthusiasts in water sports such as motor boating, jet skiing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing.
Resurrection of the Lunawa lagoon and flood water system is a part of Colombo Flood Control and Environmental Improvement Project (GCFC&EIP) with financial assistance from the Government of Japan on the initiative of the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Cooperation (SLLRDC) of the Ministry of Housing and Plantation Infrastructure.
The Lagoon had been causing environmental pollution with inundation of surroundings in rainy seasons due to stagnant flood water in network of canals and drains connecting to the lagoon.
At present Navy and SLLRDC jointly engage in maintaining the lagoon and canals.
