We are able to speak of a tomorrow and hold hopes of a future because President Mahinda Rajapaksa removed all barriers that obstructed our future development.  If we dedicate ourselves with good intentions it will not be impossible for us to march forward and achieve the goals of becoming the wonder nation of Asia along with the emerging economic giants of Asia such as China and India.  Currently many countries in the west are facing bankruptcy, and all indications point out that Asian region is the emerging economic power in the future.

The Minister of Mass Media and Information Mr. Keheliya made these comments when he addressed the staff of the Ministry of Mass Media & Information this morning at a ceremony held in the Ministry to mark the first working day of the New Year.

In the past the government, on the advise of institutions such as the World Bank, the IMF, the ADB, the government service was considered a burden to the nation and hence steps were taken to prune the public service and to send government servants and State Institution employees on compulsory retirement and curb recruitment to the public service.  Contrary this notion the President and the government have kept full confidence in the government servants and several measures were taken to strengthen the public service and afford with various concessions.

Elections are considered as a mode to gauge the opinion of the people in a democratic society and it is the duty and responsibility of each and everyone to respect the majority opinion of a democratic society and co-operate and assist in carrying out the programmes formulated in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the majority and implement the programmes of the government instituted by majority despite divergent political affiliations.

The public servants have an enormous task to fulfill in this development decade and they should assist the government to implement its objective to make Sri Lanka a wonder nation of the Asia.

The Secretary to the Ministry Mr. W.B.Ganegala addressing this function said that the government has laid the foundation to achieve the objective of making the country the wonder nation of Asia with a GDP growth of 8% and bringing down the inflation considerably.  He said in addition to this the World Bank and other financial institutions have complimented the government on its achievements and this is a complimentary indication for the country.  He said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his New Year message has emphasized on the importance of serving others with compassion and humanity and it is the duty and responsibility of everyone to exercise their duties without any form of discrimination and with the good intention of strengthening the national unity.

Mr. Ganegala further said that despite belonging to various ethnicity and holding faith in different religions, all citizens of Sri Lanka should be treated without any form of discrimination and this was what the President expressed in his message stating that all Sri Lankans are one and same and there is no segment called minority other than unpatriotic elements who are considered as a minority in the country.  Mr. Ganegala emphasized that if everyone makes a determination to serve honestly and compassionately in exercising their duties the achievement of the development goals of the government will not become a difficult task, and urged everyone to work in dedication for the development of the country in order to ensure a better future for the posterity.

The Additional Secretary to the Ministry Mrs. K.W.T.N.Ameratunge also addressed the meeting.
