The chief Medical Officer of Colombo Municipal Council Dr.Pradeep Kariyawasam yesterday stressed on the requirement to change school hours in order to avoid children being exposed to dengue mosquitoes. Dengue mosquitoes are found to be active from 7.00 am to 4.00 pm he said. School children were found to be very much exposed to dengue mosquitoes as schools starts at 7.30 am. In the recent past 40 percent of dengue patients reported in the city were school children he further added.
Dr.Kariyawasam suggested that it would be most appropriate if school children are made to wear long trousers, long sleeved shirts while the girls are made to wear long sleeves with their ankles covered as dengue mosquitoes are normally found to sting in the forearms, wrists and ankles.
He emphasized that education authorities as well as the public should play a major role in keeping the school premises as well as the surroundings clean in order to prevent spreading of dengue mosquitoes. There is a 45 percent drop in dengue patients compared to last year, he further added.
